There is a small amateur adult S.A.B. choir whose home church is at St Mary’s where they rehearse.
Occasionally the choir sings at other churches in the Parish.
For major events (eg. Carol service) the choir is augmented with other local singers.
Each church has an organ, three of which are pipe organs, the fourth being a Johannus
with two manuals and full pedal board situated at Cregneash. All the pipe organs
are relatively small two manual instruments dating from the late 1880’s – 1900.
St Mary’s is a Hewitt organ but has had some improvements in the last 50 years and
is due to have major repairs including some tonal alterations early in 2011.
The organs at St Catherine and Kirk Christ were originally built by Morgan and have similar specifications. St Catherine’s needs some repair and this will hopefully be done in the not too distant future. The sound of the organ at Kirk Christ is less restricted than the others due to being in a more open position at the rear of the church. At some time in the future this organ too will need an overhaul but at present is in reasonable working order although occasionally a little temperamental probably due to variations in temperature. There is a parish keyboard situated at St Mary’s and a piano at St Catherine’s.
The main sung services are at St Mary’s. Common Worship Holy Communion is sung to
a setting by Patrick Appleford, although the Creed is said. The BCP Morning Prayer
is fully sung, sometimes with an anthem. Common Worship Morning Prayer is at present
only with hymns, but the intention is to have some further musical input into this
service in the near future.
Family services at both St Mary’s and St Catherine’s
are informal and often have musical items by the children. Evensongs have the canticles
sung by the congregation but on occasions the choir is present when full settings
are sung. All other services are just with hymns, although the congregation at Kirk
Christ has recently been singing the Venite and Jubilate at BCP Morning Prayer. There
are some instrumentalists in the Parish and very occasionally they have been used
in services.
There is a considerable amount of musical activity in the area, including Rushen
Silver Band, Meadowside Choral Society and a small local Manx Choir. The standard
exceeds what you would expect from a small community.
The churches are sometimes
used as venues for concerts which are well supported.
