St Catherines
Friendly lunches are held in St Catherine’s Hall on the second Friday
in the month and is extremely well supported.
A group of volunteers meet at 9.30am
to set up the tables. At 11.30am they have coffee, listen to a reading from scripture
and then say prayers. God blesses the efforts of the volunteers so generously.
The soup and crumble is donated by the ladies who make it and the £3.50 charge, less expenses for tablecloths, napkins, milk, butter, coffee tea and bread etc, is kept until it reaches £300 at which point it is sent to a charity.
The volunteers who provide food write their name and their chosen charity on a piece of paper. These are drawn each time the £300 target is reached. To date £2,400 has been donated to eight different charities.
Soup is served with a brown roll followed by fruit crumble with custard. At the end
of the meal tea or coffee is available.
St Marys
On the last Friday of each month the people of Port-St-Mary are invited to eat a Friendly Lunch organised by the Ladies Working Party, and other willing volunteers.
The lunch, which includes a first course of a variety of soups with a roll, a second course of selection of fruit pies and custard, and a final course of coffee or cheese and biscuits, is provided for the sum of £3.50.
The ladies act as waitresses and enjoy serving the many guests who attend. The proceeds from two of the lunches go to chosen charities. The atmosphere in St Mary’s Hall is electric and the guests truly enjoy the occasion.
The event which is open to everyone, not just church-goers, provides outreach and mission for all and shows that the Church of England is certainly alive and well in Port-St-Mary.
